The Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday approved seeking investors through a competitive procurement process for a 200 MW Geo Gas Terminal at Kerawalapitiya power plant on a build-own-operate-and-transfer (BOOT) basis for 20 years.
The project, identified as a key initiative in the long-term electricity generation plan (2023–2042) approved by the Sri Lanka Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL), will feature internal burner engines with a combined capacity of 200 MW and twin fuel capability.
“A block of land adjacent to Sobadanavi Company Ltd., in Kerawalapitiya has been earmarked for this venture. The plant will be developed under a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model for a period of 20 years, functioning as an independent power generator,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena said at the weekly post-Cabinet media briefing yesterday.
He said the move will boost energy security and diversify country’s energy mix by incorporating advanced dual-fuel technology.
