Tourism in the Maldives has been adversely affected by derogatory comments made by three Maldivian Deputy Ministers about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep.
In 2023, India was the Maldives’ largest source market for tourism, followed by Russia and China.
However, due to the recent row, India has slipped to the sixth position, raising concerns for the Maldivian economy, which heavily relies on tourism.
India is also the largest source market for tourism in Sri Lanka.
In the first two months of 2024, visitors from India amounted to 64,426, a 134% increase from the previous year. This increase has helped bring in the highest number of arrivals since the COVID-19 pandemic.
