The Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Dr. Hasan Mahmud, expressed keen interest in expanding trade and commerce with Sri Lanka.
He made these remarks during a courtesy call by Sri Lankan High Commissioner Dharmapala Weerakkody at the foreign ministry in Dhaka yesterday (11), according to a press release.
During the meeting, they discussed matters of mutual interest. Mahmud expressed satisfaction with the existing bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
He thanked the High Commissioner for conveying congratulatory messages to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from the Head of State and the Head of Government of Sri Lanka, following the victory in the 12th National Parliamentary elections.
The Foreign Minister also expressed happiness over Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, stating that Bangladesh always stands by Sri Lanka during times of crisis. Mahmud emphasized realizing the full potential of the two countries in strengthening relations for the betterment of their peoples.
He mentioned that both countries could intensify bilateral cooperation in trade, agriculture, fisheries, ICT, hospitality sector, shipping, maritime connectivity, and people-to-people contact.
Mahmud suggested expanding bilateral trade by exporting high-quality pharmaceuticals and garments to Sri Lanka. He also requested more Sri Lankan investment in Economic Zones. The Foreign Minister underlined the importance of the early conclusion of bilateral instruments, including the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA).
High Commissioner Weerakkody informed the Foreign Minister about the prevailing economic situation in Sri Lanka, highlighting that Sri Lanka is now in an economic recovery phase with the support of friendly countries like Bangladesh. He mentioned that both countries can work together to expand sectoral cooperation for mutual benefit.
The Foreign Minister sought Sri Lanka’s support in the early repatriation of Rohingyas. He also emphasized that Bangladesh and Sri Lanka can collaborate extensively in regional bodies like SAARC, BIMSTEC, and IORA. The Foreign Minister wished the High Commissioner a successful tenure in Bangladesh and assured him of full support.
